Real ales from Thwaites
Whichever watering hole you decide to stop off at, you’ll find as you’d imagine, a well stocked bar serving the finest Thwaites real ales, brewed by Daniel Thwaites since 1807.
Guests can sample the renowned Thwaites Original, Wainwright Golden Ale and Lancaster Bomber. Plus every month we introduce a Signature ale, specially brewed by our Head Brewer, to celebrate the changing seasons – be it a warming wintery brew or light refreshing ale for summer.
2013 Signature ales
Inspired by the very chalkboards that promote our cask ales these new, occasional beers have been crafted using two hundred years of Lancashire brewing know-how and will be available to taste over 2013.
They complement our popular, easy drinking ales, such as Wainwright and Thwaites Lancaster Bomber but offer something new and interesting for the more discerning drinker.

World’s Best Mild!
We are pleased to announce that Thwaites Nutty Black has been named as the World’s Best Mild and of the nine best dark beers in the world. World’s Best Mild 2012, Sweet plummy nose, burnt, smoky, taste with dark fruit and lots of dark malts. Biscuits, some liquorice, great complexity for such a low ABV. Big and warm in the long, lingering finish.
Wines off the beaten path
An advantage of being part of Daniel Thwaites plc, the independent family controlled brewer, is that we also own James Pickup & Co Wine and Spirit Merchants. Established in 1790 and purveyors of fine wines ever since, they are our exclusive supplier of Thwaites Inns of Character.
The wonderful thing about having our own wine merchants is that the list has no limits and when we find a fantastic wine to share, we can easily access it. Similarly, as we deal direct with small growers in many instances, we’re able to offer top quality wines at a competitive price.
Price Range and Policy
We’re very conscious that prices of wine are increasing for many different reasons – the change in VAT, the increase in duty and the relative weakness of the pound against other currencies. So we’re delighted to inform you that many of our ‘entry level’ wines are available for less than twenty-five pounds.
We also continue with our policy of pricing wines with a standard mark up, with a small additional charge for financing some of the older stored wines. Simply, the better quality the wine, the better value it is, so go on, spoil yourself.
